I have just read the first chapter of Albert Camus’s the Stranger. First starting sentence“Maman died today.” It cannot be a joyful but
it is not sad at all because Monsieur Meursault seemed fine. He did not show me any mood. Usually, when most sons
and daughters heard about their parent were passed away, they could be wailing crazily. But the protagonist Meursalult was strange.
Here is some evidence.
First, He was stranger because of his action for his mother’s death. When he visited old home, the director asked him if he want to go to see
his mother. He said he does not want to. Usually, most sons and daughters want to see mother ‘s last moment. Meursalult was not. After the funeral,
he went to beach with his girlfriend and watched movie together. He was lustful too. It seemed he already forgotten his
mother’s death. As time passed, he stated nothing had changed.
He had called stranger because he reveals that he does not care anything. Meursalult’s girlfriend Marie questioned him that if he wanted to
marry her. He responded it did not make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted. Furthermore, He could marry her even though
he does not love her. He did not really care about her but he wanted her physically. Other thing is when Raymond asked him to do witness
he agreed. Badly, Raymond was hitting her and that was not right. It was not his business so he just said yes even though
not right. He did not really care. It was whatever.
Mostly, I could say he is stranger because he is an apathetic. I would talk more about his feeling to his mother which was non feeling.
At the funeral, he watched his mother’s dead body. He was not ever cry. Moreover, when a person asked mother’s age He could not answered
but he said she is fairly old. I could not understand him how he does not knowing his mother’s age. Did he really love her? Is there
any affection to his mom? My point of view is not at all.
I finally wrap up my essay Meursalult could earn the title stranger because his action was odd, he seemed does not care anything include
her girlfriend, and mostly he was an apathetic. After all these, I felt that I want to know him more.

Albert Camus published his first novel the Stranger in 1949. The main character Meursault earned the title through his relationships. First scene was Meursault having to attend his mother’s funeral. Even though, mother was passed away he did not show any emotion. That part was made me uncomfortable. After his mother’s death Meursault was enjoyed himself. He slept 12 hours, met girlfriend, and, went to beach. The biggest scene was, he went to beach with his friends and he killed Arab man with no reasons. He was awaited his trial at prison. I watched the film the Man Who Wasn't There. During the class, we finished reading a novel Stranger. It is good thing that I could compare between the film and the novel. A brief summary for the film, the main character works at barbershop, whose name is Dave. He is the barber. He married with the woman who likes drinking alcohol and enjoy her own life. Dave's life is stability at first somehow but one day, his life turns miserable. His wife arrest by murderer, Dave is also catch by police because of murderer. After finished film I realized that there were similarities and differences between the film and the novel.
The character in the novel and film, they were ambiguity. Dave did not show his emotion to his wife and even his co-worker in the film. When he was staying in the barber shop, the person who was keep talking his co-worker. His only action was smoking cigarette, and talking himself on his mind. Additionally, when he heard about that wife arrested by murderer, he could be shocked or worried about her. However, he stared the policeman without say anything. When he went to jail to see his wife, he stared his wife too. He had nothing to say her. Meursault was also did not show his feeling in the novel. When he heard about his mother’s death, he did not cry at all, and he did not even want to see his mother’s body. The most ambiguity part was he enjoyed his life that he went to beach, and dated with his girlfriend. Both novel and film, they represented like nothing changed in their life.
